Georgia Super Speeder Law

The Georgia Super Speeder Law, enacted Jan. 1, 2010, adds new penalties to anyone convicted of driving at speeds deemed excessive in the State of Georgia.

According to the law (HB 160, OCGA 40-6-189), a “Super Speeder” is a driver who reaches speeds of 75 mph or above on a two-lane road or highway or speeds of 85 mph or above on any roadway in the state of Georgia. If convicted of violating the law, a driver will face a $200 “Super Speeder” fine in addition to a fine from where the speeding offense took place. The law is based on the speed reached at the time of the violation, not an amount over the speed limit. A local judge can not waive the Super Speeder fine, as it is a state law and handled through the state Department of Driver Services.

The “Super Speeder” fine is not issued at the time of the traffic stop.  Within 30 days after the stop, the driver will receive notice of the fine and will be given 90 days to pay it.  If the fee is not paid within that time, the offender’s license will be suspended and will face an additional reinstatement fee along with the other fines and fees, including the Super Speeder fine.

You Need a Traffic Ticket Defense Attorney

If you received a speeding ticket or were cited for other moving violations, you could benefit from discussing your options with a traffic ticket defense attorney prior to taking any action. Drivers often fail to realize how quickly their driving record can be blemished by unexpected citations, and how costly auto insurance surcharges and increases in annual premiums can be.

Although paying a traffic fine may appear to be the easiest way out, it may not be the smartest thing for you to do. Our attorneys are experienced in assisting Georgia and out-of-state drivers with Georgia traffic tickets.

At Dove Law, our lawyers are experienced in dealing with local law enforcement officials and can assist you in determining the best decision for handling a broad range of traffic tickets, including:

  • speeding tickets
  • points on driver’s license
  • driving with a suspended license
  • passing a school bus
  • running a stop sign or red light
  • reckless or careless driving
  • driving without car insurance
  • DUI or DWI charges
  • exceeding DMV points
  • warrants for unpaid tickets, or
  • single vehicle accidents
